Are you looking for a plant that is contemporary and easy to grow in both pots and in the ground? If so, then the Yucca plant is the right choice for you! With its lovely blossoms on tall stalks, the Yucca plant makes a beautiful addition to basically any home or lawn.
The Yucca plant is a slow growing evergreen plant that has sword-like leaves and bell-shaped flowers and can survive for many months without water. Considered a US native plant, the Yucca plant has many species and varieties that grow well in our gardens such as Yucca Elephanties, Yucca Harrimaniae and the Joshua Tree.
Growing a Yucca Plant
Although Yucca is not picky regarding sun or shade, it does need bright light when kept indoors. So, it is important to check the species you are considering to plant to make sure you will have the right growing conditions for them. Sometimes, lack of light can discourage the blooming of Yucca plants.
When it comes to soil, this plant prefers a well-drained soil with a pH level that ranges from 5.5-7.5, which is ideal to accommodate a wide range of Yucca plants. Regular fertilization and trimming will help keep the plant healthy and encourage plant growth and Yucca flowers. Keep in mind that Yuccas need to reach a certain age of maturity to bloom. Plus, blooms on these plants usually appear during the warmest part of the growing season (it differs slightly for each species).
In addition to being beautiful, the Yucca flower is also safe to eat. Experts describe the taste of Yucca flowers as slightly bitter, with a hint of artichoke flavour and they can be eaten both raw or lightly sauteed.
