Step One

Get some paper and a pencil. Express your feelings without limitations by writing prose for a limit of 5 minutes or less. Try and keep writing the whole time. When you’re stalling, start writing sentences with phrases that conjure your senses, such as touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing.

Step Two

Now it’s time to review the prose. Love has a lot of emotions that take time expressing fluently. Use a red pen and draw boxes around phrases and words that are associated with love and romance. These boxes will allow you to later identify the places where the message can be refined.

Step Three

Use a blue pen to underline phrases that express shared experiences between you and the subject. Use concrete images that bring up strong feelings, they will call to mind memories that have a deeper connection with abstract things such as truth, beauty, and love. Look for a really vivid phrase and write it at the beginning of your love poem.

Step four

Use what you have from the prose as an outline for the poems intended sentiment. Refer to the prose for ideas, however, keep the poem tightly constructed and don’t overflow with emotions. Concentrate on what’s important with the feelings, topic and moment. The love poems that are the most famous and most renown are often the shortest. Check for what you have boxed in red ink. Work around the clichés and twist them into unexpected similes and metaphors. Good images in love poems can come from anywhere within in you and everywhere around you. Unexpected things can work very well in a love poem just as hearts and roses if the poem sounds earnest.

Step Five

For the last step, revise and review your love poem. Go through the poem and check for grammar and spelling mistakes, and correct them. Read it out loud and see if the stanza and line break off in places where you would naturally pause while reading. Edit out the words that obstruct the flow of the meter when they are spoken. Create a finished copy with your love quotes and type it or rewrite it neatly in a clean sheet of paper.
